Guest Album Review: Candydrip - Lucky Daye

This review is part of a series of guest album reviews written by WARC DJs.

Hi guys! I'm Bri, a DJ with WARC at Allegheny College! First album review of the spring 2022 semester!

Candydrip is the second studio album of R&B artist Lucky Daye. This album has been long awaited as Painted came out in 2019. This body of work has a specific theme, candy or more so, sweet flavors. As Painted was about colors, the colors of Daye himself and the way he works with love and relationships. This one is about the flavors Daye encounters with the unnamed woman he's pursuing.

This album just screams “Summer Vibes”. I stayed up for this release and enjoyed every part. I luckily got into his album release party Tuesday evening and got to hear the first 10 tracks and wow, is all I can say.

This album consists of 17 tracks going in this order.

Daye is from New Orleans, and you can see the colors of the album give that vibe, the very vibrant blues, greens, purples and gold accents. Going along with the sweet flavor vibe, his era styling gives Willy Wonka. I really love the visuals we’ve got so far.

Candydrip is an R&B album through and through, giving the stylistic qualities of classic R&B with a bit of trap feel, very prominent in NWA with Durk. Across the project itself, Daye tackles a romance that weaves through ups and downs, pushing the songwriter back and forth. The really sensual track has to be ‘Guess’ where Daye gives us his all with his sultry vocals over a sample of Usher’s ‘You Don’t Have To Call’. ‘Over’ brings in a sample of Musiq Soulchild’s ‘Half Crazy’ with an acoustic guitar line as Daye sings about the toxicity in the relationship he’s in. Though the whole project, he shows his versatility in his work, through sultry, pitch-breaking vocals, rap verses and spoken word, it paints him as a multi-dimensional artist. Including background vocals of a woman on a few tracks gives this angelic feel to this candy coated dream he created for this sophomore album.

I actually have the wonderful opportunity to see Lucky Daye on April 15th on the CANDYDRIP tour in Cleveland, so I'll get back to you guys when that night comes!
